From the moment I booted up Helldivers 2, it unexpectedly dredged up nostalgic memories of Lost Planet, Capcom’s classic third-person shooter. Oddly enough, it didn’t remind me much of the original Helldivers—that PlayStation Plus freebie from years ago that most of us played once and forgot. But if any game deserves a callback, it’s this one—a bombastic, satirical sci-fi shooter that gleefully embraces chaos.
Set in a hostile, war-torn galaxy, Helldivers 2 drops you into deadly environments where survival is far from guaranteed. In fact, the game revels in its darkly comedic tone, channeling Starship Troopers with its over-the-top propaganda and tongue-in-cheek jingoism. The premise is simple: fight for "Super Earth" alongside your squad, complete objectives, and try not to die—though the latter is easier said than done.
A Deeper Shooter Than Expected
Despite its goofy exterior, Helldivers 2 is a surprisingly tactical squad-based shooter. The mechanics demand precision: calling in Stratagems (airstrikes, supply drops, turrets) requires inputting quick button combos mid-firefight. Reloading too early wastes ammo, and injuries make you more vulnerable—bad news when you’re already swarmed by bugs or blasted by enemy mechs.
This isn’t just another mindless cover shooter. Cover barely matters when you’re facing hordes of alien insects or robotic foes with pinpoint accuracy. Instead, you’ll spend most missions diving to the ground, desperately firing, and praying your Stratagems land in time. The sheer chaos is exhilarating, especially when a misplaced supply pod crushes you instead of saving you.
Mission Structure and Progression
After a brief but hilarious training session, you’re thrown into missions that escalate in difficulty. Easy missions are straightforward, but higher difficulties introduce complex objectives, harsher environments, and tighter time limits. Extraction is always looming, forcing you to balance exploration with efficiency.
While solo play is possible, Helldivers 2 truly shines in co-op. Matchmaking (after a rocky launch) now works smoothly, and fighting alongside strangers is a blast. Pinging objectives, strategizing routes, and watching each other’s backs creates a camaraderie that few shooters achieve. There’s nothing quite like saluting your squadmates right before a giant bug eviscerates you all.
Live-Service Done Right (For Now)
Missions take place across dynamically changing planets, influenced by the ongoing "Galactic War"—a live-service element that evolves based on player efforts. Completing missions pushes back enemy factions, unlocking new sectors and challenges. Between drops, you’ll customize loadouts, upgrade your ship, and unlock Stratagems that range from orbital strikes to automated turrets.
Progression is tied to two currencies: Medals (earned in-game) and Super Credits (premium, but earnable in small amounts). The monetization feels fair so far, with most gear accessible through gameplay. Still, future updates will test whether Helldivers 2 avoids pay-to-win pitfalls.
Final Thoughts
Helldivers 2 delivers exactly what I wanted—an explosive, chaotic shooter—but also surprised me with its depth and teamwork focus. Even after sessions end, I find myself itching to dive back in, whether to face tougher foes or explore new planets. Despite its shaky launch, the game has solidified itself as one of 2024’s standout multiplayer experiences. If Arrowhead Studios maintains this momentum, Helldivers 2 could remain a co-op staple for years to come.
